After the announcement of the OnePlus 7T and the OnePlus 7T Pro, we all were waiting for Google to give us reasons not to buy them. The Pixel 4 & 4XL have already been announced and the Pixel 4XL is expected to be available in India from 31 October 2019. I'm excited to get my hands on the Pixel 4XL.
It was the last major announcement of the year and like every year I had great expectations from Google. But Let's see. When I first saw the Pixel phones on the stage they were like mah! And then the specs were mah! I still had hopes that Google would do magic with the cameras and software. Telephoto instead of ultrawide was again mah!
Don't get me wrong. Both the Pixel 4 & 4XL are brilliant phones in every aspect and I'm sure will turn out to be the phones with best Android experience. Let's rush through the specifications of Pixel 4XL as Pixel 4 wouldn't be making it to the Indian market. The phone has a very clean and minimalist look. It comes in Panda White, O so Orange and Glossy Black. The Pixel 4XL comes with a 6.3" P-OLED screen with a resolution of 1440 x 3040 pixels. The screen has a pixel density of 537 ppi to keep things crisp & clear and and an aspect ratio of 19:9. The 4XL is the first Pixel phone to get an HDR compatible screen with refresh rates of 90Hz. The phone comes with thick bezels both at the top and the bottom that makes it look like a phone from early 2018. Google has officially replaced the fingerprint sensor for 3D face unlock so there are some new sensors along with a radar making it the fastest smartphone to unlock using face detection. The phone is protected by Corning Gorilla glass 5 both in the front and back.
The Pixel 4XL is powered by the Snapdragon 855 chipset with Adreno 640 GPU. The phone doesn't support MicroSD card and comes in 6GB/64GB & 6GB/128GB variants. This isn't anything close to any flagship phones these days. Even mid range phones from Redmi, realme and other bands offer 8GB/128GB & 8GB/256GB variants with MicroSD card support.
Let's talk about the reason why Pixel phones are the best. The cameras. It has a dual camera setup on the back. We get a 12.2 MP (28mm) wide lens with f/1.7 aperture and a 16MP (45mm) telephone lens with 2x optical zoom & f/2.4 aperture. I wish the phone had a third ultrawide lens. You can shoot 2160p@30fps, 1080p@30/60/130fps and 1080p@30fps videos. The primary 12.2 MP lense gets dual pixel autofocus & PDAF for better focusing speeds and OIS for better low light photos and stable video footage. The secondary 16MP lens also gets PDAF and OIS. The last thing that you would see on the back is the TOF (Time-of-flight) 3D camera that should give us great videos with bokek. In the front we get an 8MP (22mm) wide lens with f/2.0 aperture that should take selfies.
The Pixel 4XL runs on Android 10 with the best Android experience from Google. A 3700 mAh batter with 18W fast charge is not bad though may need frequent charging due to the 90Hz screen refresh rates. Pixel 4XL is a great flagship phone with everything you would expect though not the greatest of 2019.
